04/09: MiE B50 Business Showcase

Finally after 6 months of this entrepreneurial journey through MiE, I am proud to say that HYDRA has successfully reached a significant milestone by presenting at the MiE Business Showcase where the whole of my batch presented their start-ups to the judges, juniors, future MiE entrants and those who were in the library. Almost 5 months ago all of the teams only had an idea of what they wanted to do and today seeing it come to fruition was just a surreal moment for me. It just showed me how possible and rewarding a start-up can be if the right amount of focus and time was put in for the development and operation. Looking back at my journey in HYDRA, it surely wasn't easy having to handle FYP, VA and the start-up but it really taught me many lessons by pushing me out of my comfort zone to make things work. Some of the key things which I've picked up would be building strong leadership & personal qualities, interpersonal skills, optimism via calculated decisions and being a better marketeer & salesperson. I'm really thankful to all my customers, past professors, friends and teammates for making this happen through your support, guidance and camaraderie.

I know that this sounds like a farewell note but just to let you know HYDRA is not coming to an end. In fact, it is a growing business and will be moving forward to its next phase with changes in the current system and the addition of the new products in the Mulan line. This account will soon be locked from further updates as the minor is coming to an end, nonetheless, do stay tuned to HYDRA's instagram page for our growth and progress.

I hope you have gained some inspiration from my journey blog and have enjoyed reading it.

With that, I wish you all the best in your own journey.

Godspeed!

01/09: New Sales

As of today, I have received 6 more sales for the original price of $39.90 from the friends of my past clients. This just proved to me how hardwork and influence helps a business grow. I'm looking forward to what this month has in stored for HYDRA in terms of sales and the creation of our new addition into the Mulan series. I have also attached the cash flow statement of HYDRA for the month of July and August in our financial statement tab.

28/08: Something New Is Coming

This was a teaser done by me for the new release which we have been talking about. We are still in talks with each other and the supplier regarding the various earring designs which would be our second product in the Mulan series.

26/08: HYDRA Meetup

Today, the 3 of us met up at ARC at about 5pm to talk about the business showcase presentation which would be held next week. The submission of the slides would be on Wednesday so we had to discuss about what are we going to present and also split the presentation into 3 parts for each of us to present. After identifying the agenda for our presentation, we were able to split the parts accordingly and start the content creation for our individual parts. We also decided to get everything done by Tuesday 2359H so that there would be sufficient lead-time from deadline.

25/08: Delivered As Promised!!!

As of today, I've delivered all of my 27 order requests and during a client meetup just now I was able to close another sale with my client's friend. All my clients are also happy with the bracelets they received and have been asked by their colleagues about the Mulan bracelets. Looks like I'll be getting in more sales in the month of September.

23/08: Good Intention But Wrong Approach

Today, Kai did something which was meant with good intentions but using a wrong approach. At about 1pm he made a call of initiating a sponsorship deal with his school club without informing the team. I only got to know about this initiative at 7.30pm when the Computer Science & Engineering Club contacted HYDRA via instagram message. When I saw it I was shocked as I didn't get any update from the team about this so I immediately asked in the team group chat who initiated this offer and that was when Kai owned up that it was him. Both Jia Hui and I were totally uninformed about this and I started to explain to Kai that what he did was a good thing but the way he approached was totally wrong. The minimum he must have done after initiating the offer to his school club was to let us know about the matter so that we too will be informed. I understand that his intentions were in the right place but the way he carried it out was just wrong and it kind of gave Jia Hui and I no choice or say on this matter as the deal was initiated using HYDRA's name. After my explanation, he understood where he went wrong and apologized for his doings. As it was a good initiative, I did agree to it as it was a good opportunity for brand awareness and product marketing even though the approach he took was wrong.

20/08: Delivery of Bracelets

I had no class today and took an off day from FYP so I was able to contact my clients regarding their bracelet delivery information (preferred location, date & time for delivery). After collating the information by morning, I was able to finish my last delivery of the day by 9pm clearing about 1/3 of my order requests. The remaining 2/3 of the orders by my clients are to be delivered by this week according to their preference.

19/08: Collection of Bracelets

Today, after my lessons at about 6.40pm I went over to Kai's hall to collect all the bracelets from my 27 orders. All the products were fine except for 1 order which Kai had made an error with the bracelet colour used for engraving. Thus, he will be sorting the issue out tomorrow so that I would be able to fulfil the order according to the given timeline to my client. In the upcoming few days I'll be fulfilling my 27 order requests by delivering the bracelets to my clients. I have also discussed with my team about our upcoming move on the new product for our Mulan line. We have brainstormed the idea of selling earrings as the next move forward. Let see how things work out.

Godspeed!

18/08: Ending of Promotion

The 1st week of school just came to an end and so did HYDRA's pre-order promotion. The poster I created was sent out via text and socials to our audience on Friday night. I also re-kindled my potential customers who were on the fence the previous time I engaged them. This end of promotion helped me to push my sales up by another 12 people. Thus, standing at a total individual sales of 27 bracelets. I'm also proud to say that I have the highest sales amongst my peers and that was only possible due to the skills imparted in me by all the MiE professors, my past experiences and my network.

Creating HYDRA and coming this far surely hasn't been easy especially with my whole vacation back in the RSAF, under the NDP2019 OS while also juggling my Final Year Project in school. I had to make sure to keep the designing and marketing efforts effective for our sales and also deliver as many personal sales as possible. Furthermore for the last 2 weeks, I had to manage the marketing all by myself as Kai was unable to commit due to his intern and orientation camp. Thus, I will surely admit that it was never easy but I'm glad that we have come this far and have helped one another to keep things rolling.

In the coming week, I'll be meeting up with my clients to deliver the merchandises they have ordered and also thank them for their support. With the successful closure of the promotion, I've also talked to my team about expanding out Mulan line with a new product. Currently, we are still in talks on the product and will soon come to a decision on this matter.

11/08: NDP19 and My VA Comes to An End

It was a super tiring yet a fruitful and successful week with NDP19. This week's update isn't really about HYDRA instead it is about NDP. As part of the NDP Parade & Ceremony Organising Secretariat (P&C OS), it was really rewarding for me to see how all our effort and planning unfolded this week for the actual show to the people of Singapore and the international community. It has never been easy to be part of an organising team but the experiences and memories gained from such experiences can never be bought or taught and I will truly cherish them. I am sure that I'll be able to use these skills which I've picked up from the last 3 months in NDP's P&C OS in the future ahead of me.

After the whole show, my colleagues and I went for the post show reception where we enjoyed the company of the NDP family with a great tasting spread. These were some of the photos that were taken during the event as shown on the left.

With NDP and my Vacational Attachment (VA) coming to an end and school starting next week, its time to focus on my last semester in NTU, FYP and MiE. The current update for HYDRA would be the arrival of our shipment this coming week and that would mean that by next week we will be able to deliver the goods to our customers.

Let the semester begin!

04/08: Coming a Long Way

It is reaching NDP19 and school is going to start in a weeks time. I have come a long way in my Vacational Attachment with NDP19 Organising Secretariat, MiE and FYP. It hasn't been easy but I have persevered through the whole situation. As of now I have personally closed 16 sales for HYDRA and have the highest sales in my team. I am really thankful for my friends and family for their support in spreading the word about our Mulan bracelets. I am also thankful for all my previous experiences and MiE professors for imparting the right knowledge in me for pitching to my customers/ potential customers.

I've also talked to the team about our options on what we can do after MiE. These 2 options I've came up with is based on our financials I've tabulated. I've also attached HYDRA's cashflow statement under our financial statement tab in this site. The 2 ads attached on the left are the posts I've made this week in our socials.

Looking forward to the week ahead.

Cheers!

27/07: Getting The Numbers

This whole past week has been about marketing through various means and successfully getting across to the customers. As of now I've confirmed 14 sales all by myself and 8 of which has been closed with cash settlement. I'm really looking forward to the weeks ahead to pump my numbers up. I also took this opportunity to talk to old friends about HYDRA and also catch up with them, and certainly my effort paid off when some of them came forward to buy the bracelets. It was really heartwarming to see such gestures from old friends and colleagues. I was taken-back and appreciative of their support. I've really understood the power of having the right network through this journey, thus far.

I've also updated our financials with our expenses and sales, and I've confirmed that we will achieve our breakeven point when each of us close 11 sales each.

Meanwhile, Kai and I have continued to create content on our Instagram page and stories. Some of my work this week is as shown on the left of this post.

On the other hand, NDP is nearing and that means soon my Vacational Attachment (VA) with the RSAF will be coming to an end and school will be starting. This whole journey has been tiring with having to manage my Final Year Project, VA and MiE. However, I've taken this whole experience positively and have learnt to manage my tight schedule well by delivering all that I've have said to deliver in a timely manner.

As of now, things are looking good with the sales, marketing and pitching.

Godspeed!

20/07: Going Full Social

Pre-order promotions have started but as of now we are only utilising Instagram as our primary mode of reaching out to our audience. To change the game I talked to my team and prompted Jia Hui to handle and share the content from Instagram to Facebook as Kai and I are the ones creating content on Instagram. I've also put another idea on the table which was to use twitter for greater out-reach. Thus, a twitter account was created to facilitate this initiative.

Meanwhile, Kai and I have constantly created content on Instagram and I've created new ads ad shown. We have also PM-ed our friends and family regarding the pre-order promotion to get sales.

Looking forward to the week ahead.

14/07: Launch Is Here!

Today we have officially launched HYDRA and will be starting the pre-orders officially tomorrow. The posts we have been doing on our social media page is good but we have yet to achieve the same theme throughout all the posts so Kai and I have agreed to create content with the same/similar theme to create a light/bright feeling and vibe for our audience who visits our page.

I have also created Critical Event Timeline (CET) for my team to ensure that each person's tasking is done correctly in a timely manner. A CET is a table which shows the timeline ahead of us and the details of each and every critical event from now. It also specifically states who is responsible for the various tasks. This is following, an erosion and blurring of responsibilities and tasking amongst the roles of each person in the team. This CET would enable the team to stay aligned, keep track and progress according to the established plan.

Meanwhile, I have also created a few pre-order ads for the upcoming days as the pre-orders are finally starting tomorrow.

12/07: Insta Errday!

Starting from Wednesday, Kai and I have took turns to constantly post on our Instagram page to keep our audience engaged while raising our brand awareness amongst the people. Yes, Kai have also come aboard to design ads. On top of posting and sharing the story on the HYDRA account, we all have also shared the content on our own insta-stories to attract more attention from our respective follower base. Kai posted on Wed and Thurs while I will be posting today and tomorrow. These are the 2 ads i've created for today and tomorrow. These ads were created with the photos we gathered from the photoshoot last week. I'm thrilled to see how our daily post on social media is going to make a difference with our launch and pre-orders which is coming real soon.

09/07: Rectification

Today, I reminded my team about the standard operating procedure for our daily social media posts. Every social media post should be vetted and agreed upon by the 3 of us a day before the actual posting. This is to allow a seamless, organised and a standardised way of running this campaign. I also had to sort out the Insta following issue we had and was able to rectify it by noon.

Meanwhile, Kai was readying today's post talking about 'voices above noises', however, after vetting the poster he made, I told him that the line does not suit the image/poster and change it to something about journey. This was because, being a design student it is clear to me that the poster/picture we send to the masses should align or be in sync with the words and the style. In layman's terms, it can simply be put as a picture speaks a thousand words and these words must correlate with the actual words we accompany with the picture.

07/07: Photoshoot

As arranged previously, we all met at Marina Bay Sands for the photoshoot. I introduced Chris to Kai and Jia Hui while we had lunch and then we started to recce locations for the shoot. Our model was originally set to be my girlfriend and Jia Hui, however, due to circumstances, Jia Hui had to be a solo model for the day. We took almost 400 shots with half of the shots outdoors and half of them indoors. To appreciate Chris for his help and to thank everyone for their effort, I treated everyone a LiHo drink.

After the photoshoot, Jia Hui, Kai and I had a short discussion on the upcoming critical event and the to do list for the coming weeks. Starting from next week we will be updating our social pages daily with interesting content which relates to HYDRA and also start the pre-orders.

03/07: Getting the Pro

For the past few days I've been liaising with my friend Chris, an ADM final year student, for a photoshoot for the Mulan bracelets. And after much discussion about the shoot profile and story angle, he was kind enough to help me with the shoot on Sunday at Marina Bay Sands.

30/06: Forward We Go!

As planned we met at AMK Hub today to see the sample live and also talk about the timeline and upcoming critical events. The samples look better in real life compared to the photos the supplier sent us. I personally preferred the rose gold version and so did Kai and Jia Hui. However, we have planned to get 60 rose gold (women), 20 silver (women) and 20 silver (men) bracelets from the supplier. We have also planned to start our pre-order campaign soon. This coming week we will be focused on the photo shoot of the merchandise and for that I will be contacting my friend who is a professional photo/video-grapher. Currently, I've set aside this coming Sunday with him for the shoot. Meanwhile, Jia Hui will take photos of her own using her camera so that we can start our pre-order campaign and set up our sales website. We have also found a solution to engage our followers/customers via Instagram and that would be by posting HYDRA in their insta-story while quoting something empowering which they would love to engrave on their bracelet. The winners (the person with the best empowerment quote) will receive a free engraving service for the bracelet they purchase. Things are looking good so let's see how it goes.

Cheers.

25/06: One More.

Since we will only be meeting on Sunday as a team to see the samples and talk about the sample photos and release advert. I gathered that it would only be right to release one more advert before the sample release so as to keep the masses engaged while also explaining to them the meaning behind the Mulan series. I also came out with the tagline: Feel the class. Be empowered. Be Mulan.

24/06: Mulan Sample Has Arrived

The sample shipment arrived earlier today at Kai's place and we are setting a day to meet up this week to see the sample in real life and also make decisions for our upcoming move.

20/06: 2nd Ad Release!!

It's been a tiring week with all the NDP19 preparation for the Parade and Ceremony segment at Padang. However, I've got to do my due diligence to update the progress and the process. Today, we released our 2nd advert to the masses via social media and we are starting to stagnate in our follower-ship so we have to find ways to break out of this pattern.

The purpose of today's release was to present to the masses the first series of HYDRA merchandise and also share the narrative behind the merchandise. Jia Hui came out with an outline for the narrative and I co-created and strengthened the narrative in words to share it together with the advertisement. I also made sure that everyone was on the same page when it comes to the narrative, the message and the upcoming critical events.

All is going well and according to the timeline so I'm signing out till I update the next time.

Cheers.

17/06: Update time...

Okay... I couldn't really update my work here as i was busy with NDP 19 Media Event 2 (ME2) and Combined Rehearsal 1 (CR1) at National Gallery Singapore and Padang respectively. I'm still busy with the upcoming Presidential visit but I'll try to update my work as much as i can.

So for the past week I was doing modifications/tweaks to the logo and value designs according to my team's request. Furthermore, we also officially started out marketing campaign on Instagram and Facebook. Jia Hui was in-charge of this part but I helped her by editing the message she originally created for spreading the word amongst our friends.

We have also done the payment for the 2 samples and have seen the sample via photos from the supplier. The moment i saw the photo, I told my group that it would look nicer without the fan and that the fan is too small for the supplier to engrave it nicely. After consideration, my team also agreed and we have come to a conclusion to go fan-less for the design engraved on the bracelet. We have yet to receive a photo of the rose gold bracelet and it is still being plated. So lets give it some more time and we shall see how it goes.

As we are starting to get traction amongst the masses, we will be continuing to engage our follower and potential customers by releasing our Mulan Ad and posting Insta stories through the days.

10/06: Here we come!

Today was a tiring day at work but my day is not done yet because I had to start my ad design for HYDRA. I started off by thinking of how to go about designing the ad and how to spin the narrative of Mulan. I wanted to achieve a teaser feels for my HYDRA introduction ad and an oriental feels for the Mulan series. I wanted to be sure not to release what HYDRA is going to sell in the first 2 ads.

In my HYDRA introductory ad design, I wanted the viewers to be able to subtly infer that the HYDRA brand is something fashion related.

Since, we decided that the product series is going to be named Mulan and the narrative was going to be the values it embodied for its wielder to relate. Thus, I started to look for such values written in Chinese characters. The 4 words which I finalised for the narrative were Beauty, Virtue, Courage and Immortality. In the Mulan series disclosure ad design, I wanted to achieve an oriental feels and leave the viewers with no clues on the product. But I wanted to sneak the 4 values so that I could start spinning the narrative in our future ads so I created calligraphies of these words and placed them in the ad.

I'm glad that it all came out well. Its already 2am... and I have to wake up early tomorrow for work. So I'll stop here and leave you with my designs.

09/06: The Plan

The meeting with Adrian and Roderick yesterday was insightful and helped me to have a clearer idea of the plan ahead. They both expected more from the team in terms of the marketing campaign ideation process as we were only able to generally say our idea. Thus, I sent my team the pointers given by both of them and set a meeting today with Kai and Jia Hui after taking the whole Saturday to brainstorm.

In the meeting today, I suggested that we stick with HYDRA but release our products as a series under our brand and I also suggested using the "H" logo which I previously designed to represent us. After thinking through the team also agreed and we started to lay the path forward, which was to settle the series name and the narrative behind our product. That was when Kai, came out with the idea of using Mulan as the series name. Yes, Mulan the female heroic character. The reasons were the values she embodied and we as a team agreed that this narrative has potential as we also agreed to release this product line mainly centring female empowerment. With all that done, we were also able to find a way to relate Mulan to HYDRA as hydra is known to be a strong and immortal creature. Thus, we were able to draw some similar traits between the brand and the product line/series.

Okay, its getting late... I better head to sleep as i have to go to airbase later for work.

07/06: Confirmed

For the past few days, Kai has been in contact with the suppliers regarding the quotes and deals. To make things clearer for him and for us, I sent out a group of questions in our Whatsapp group which we would need answers to from the suppliers, in order to choose the right supplier to work with for this venture. Questions regarding price, MOQ, additional service cost (packaging and engraving), expected date of delivery and cost of delivery.

He was only able to get all the information we required from the supplier earlier today. Thus, we had a Skype meeting just now to decide on our supplier and our plans moving forward.

Looks like we are set and ready to go. Tomorrow is the first consultation with Roderick, so let's see how it goes and we shall move forward from there.

30/05: Survey Results Are Out!!!

Today, I reviewed the collated market survey results and made sense of the figures. We were able to gain a total of 73 responses through the survey. These responses were mainly from our proposed target audience of millennials.

The respondents chose the bracelet's design as the most important trait during a purchase, the price as the second most important and material as the third most important. Following that, I was able to simplify the previously shortlisted 8 design options available to our respondents into the top 3 favoured designs. It was also found out that more than one-third of the respondents would purchase their best rated design amongst the 8 designs for $20 to $30 and one-sixth of them would purchase their best design for $30 to $40.

With all these results, now we will discuss as a team and choose the design to be manufactured. By mid next week we would have confirmed our order with the supplier and would start on the next course of action which would be the marketing campaign.

2nd Font Logo Design

24/05: Changes in Brand Logo

I improvised the existing brand logo according to what my team-mates suggested. But after thinking through, we decided not to use this logo as it doesn't represent the tone/character of the product we plan to sell. Thus, we decided to go with the word "HYDRA" as our logo and with that in mind I started searching for fonts which would look good on our product. I've attached some of these fonts I found and after a discussion earlier today, we decided to take the 1st font design shown on the left as our logo.

23/05: Market Survey

Today, we had a Skype meeting as a full team where we shortlisted the designs for the market survey. We also talked about the questions we plan to post in the survey to get an unbiased sensing from our target audience. With all that said, I took up the tasking of creating the market survey while Kai took up the tasking of calling the suppliers and Jia Hui took up the tasking of updating the team blog for this session.

I've just completed the creation of the market survey form and will need to wait for Kai to get some nice up-close product photos from the suppliers to add into the survey for design ranking purposes.

We are currently within the projected timeline. If all goes well and Kai is able to get the photos from the supplier by tomorrow, we will start to dish out the market survey to the masses by Saturday.

21/05: Expect The Best. Prepare For The Worst.

After the first contact with the supplier mid last week on the idea of creating a brand new USB bracelet design based on the designs rendered, we had to huddle up to process the information as a team. It was noted that metal bracelet with USB won't be possible unless we settle for a braided metal finish; which was not what we wanted. Hence, I proposed to Kai on moving forward looking into either a leather-finish USB bracelet or a pure leather bracelet with metallic add-ons based on our current designs.

After Kai did a follow-up session with the supplier, he told me earlier today that it would be too costly as the supplier would need to create a new mould as per our designs. Thus, we have come to a conclusion to fall back on our backup plan which was to go for a stylish cum luxurious pre-designed bracelet from the supplier pool and move forward with a market survey based on the designs we shortlist from the suppliers. The results from the market survey would allow us to strike a deal with the supplier and also start on our marketing and pre-order campaign.

In the call I had with Kai just now, we have worked out a rough timeline to follow before our first consultation with Roderick in-turn bringing HYDRA back on track as we are moving towards pre-orders and away from the original idea of using Kickstarter.

15/05: Designing Part 2

Another session of designing to pen down my ideas. Crazy and tight schedule but I would say rendering is satisfying, especially when the design comes to life.

It is going to be 2am soon... I better stop for today and get some sleep as I have a long and early day ahead.

Goodnight.

14/05: Designing Part 1

I'm sleepy...

As Kai was getting in contact with the supplier, it was about time for me to start the rendering of the bracelets and it was especially tiring due to my schedule. With my return back to the airbase and being tasked to join the NDP 2019 committee, the workload was just piling up and I was only able to start on the renders once I got back home. I stayed up till 3am to get these designs and logo out but I'm glad to see the end results.

Its been some time since I last rendered but it was relatively easy for me to start all these designs from scratch as I had these ideas flowing in my head so it was just a matter of drawing line by line and creating layer by layer on my iPad Pro with the help of the Apple pencil.

I would say that these renders are still raw as they still lack light reflection and shadow which are the 2 components which makes a render look real. However, they do have enough details for us to communicate the design with the supplier. Thus, this would suffice for now.

06/05: FLASHBACK...

With finals having come to an end this semester, it is now time for me to do my due diligence by updating this blog.

In this past month, my team and I have met both online and offline to settle on an idea for our MiE Business venture. We were originally a team of 7 and then in the midst of the process, the team decided to split to be more efficient and effective in decision making. Thus, Kar Aik, Jia Hui and I joined together to form this team called HYDRA.

Our initial idea was to do an emergency charging bracelet which would allow the user to charge his/her phone when needed, however, after searching online and consulting with Roderick, we decided to put that idea behind us and possibly look into that in phase 2 (if we plan to continue after ET9135A). Considering the amount of time we would have to ideate, produce, market and start selling, we lowered our expectation and decided to work on a charging cable bracelet. With that on our agenda, we worked tirelessly to finish up the proposal and website in the midst of other submissions and tests.

After the presentation of HYDRA to Roderick and the rest of my batch-mates, we got comments from Roderick which would be critical for our upcoming actions in this business venture.

Therefore, on my way back home that day, I started to think more about our idea and started to be more observant to my surroundings; to be specific the number of people who wear bracelets. I've already spoken to my team about this matter and we have come to the conclusion of working on this matter after our finals.

Currently, I'm waiting for them to end their finals...

17/04: Rough ideas? Let talk about it...

These were some rough sketches which I came up with on my iPad when my team and I were discussing about the design and branding. These will not be presented during the pitch as they are still too raw and needs a lot more improvement before being disclosed.
